Biography

Ángel Sánchez Enríquez, born in Mexico City in 1971, is an internationally acclaimed conductor and composer whose career spans symphonic music, opera, and stage productions. Renowned for his artistic versatility and interpretative depth, he combines innovative approaches with a solid academic foundation and global performance experience.

Ángel graduated from the Escuela Superior de Música of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico with a Bachelor’s degree in Percussion. He further honed his instrumental skills in piano under Yulia Vischnevetskaia and violin under Guela Dubrova. His passion for composition led him to study with Héctor Quintanar, a student of Carlos Chávez, and to complete a Postgraduate Diploma at the European Film Scoring Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria (2022). There, he specialized in film scoring under Andy Hill (former head of Disney's Music Department), orchestration with Dr. Norman Ludwing (UCLA), and mixing and editing with Blad Boyadjiev, a sound engineer with over 600 international film credits. He also participated in masterclasses with leading composers such as Danny Elfman, Christopher Young, and David Newman, and studied video game composition with Jan Pfitzer.

As a conductor, Ángel holds a Master’s degree in the Phenomenology of Music from the University of La Rioja (Spain), specializing in the teachings of Sergiu Celibidache under the guidance of Pascual Osa and Roberto Montenegro. Since 1997, he has successfully conducted Broadway productions in Mexico, including Beauty and the Beast (Disney Production), The Phantom of the Opera (Lloyd Weber production), and Les Misérables (Cameron Mackintosh). In 2006, he conducted The Fiddler on the Roof with the Brass section from The Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra under the supervision of Kristen Blodgette from New York. His symphonic career includes collaborations with orchestras in Mexico and Spain including the Filarmonía de Madrid, establishing him as a versatile artist across various musical settings.

As a composer, Ángel blends emotional depth with historical narratives and cultural exploration. His most notable works include:

  • Op. 1: Á Laura (2019): Recorded with PARMA Recordings and The Athens Philharmonia, this piece captures the delicate nuances of emotion through a universal musical language.

  • Op. 2: Vercingétorix: Performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, this work depicts a historical Celtic event with epic musical character.

  • Op. 3: Jeanne d’Arc: This violin concerto narrates the life of the Maid of Orleans, capturing her heroism and humanity with deeply moving musical expression.

Ángel Sánchez currently conducts symphony orchestras and operas in Mexico and Spain while working on new compositional projects that bridge musical traditions with contemporary audiences.
